The Larimer County Genealogical Society’s annual Holiday Party is coming up on Thursday, December 5. It’ll be held from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Mimi’s Restaurant at 1450 Fall River Drive in Loveland. As usual, attendees are responsible for their own meal and can order individually from the entire restaurant menu, choosing as much or as little as they want. All LCGS members are invited along with any spouses, significant others, friends or any other guests they’d like to bring along. The holiday party is strictly a social event, so everyone is welcome. No need to rsvp; just show up on the 5th!
The holiday party has always been one of my favorite LCGS events because it is a time to visit informally with other genealogists and get to know a little more about their genealogy journeys (even though it’s a social event, you can be certain that genealogical triumphs and frustrations will be shared with table mates over dinner!). This year one of the highlights of the event promises to be the chance to use cell phones to access Family Search’s “Relatives Around Me” app to see who in the room might be related. To play along, you’ll need to download Family Search’s Mobile App in advance. It’s free, but you will need to sign up for a Family Search account. The current November/December LCGS newsletter has directions on how to proceed, although the process is quite self-explanatory. I can almost guarantee that you’ll find a heretofore unknown cousin or two when you turn on the “Relatives Around Me” app.
The LCGS Holiday Party started nearly twenty years ago with a small group of us meeting at the Fort Collins Golden Corral for a casual buffet meal; it soon morphed into a much larger group which outgrew most of the restaurants in town. Luckily for us, Mimi’s has proven an ideal spot for our get together, with a broad menu at reasonable prices and a large room where we can gather to visit and mingle. Whether this will be your first LCGS Holiday Party or your umpteenth one like me, I’m sure you’ll enjoy getting to know fellow genealogists (and their guests) a little better. Hope to see you on the 5th.
